- Know the EWL of your cmm styli
Choose from a comprehensive range of genuine Renishaw stylus options be to be sure that the cmm stylus materials and and cmm styli design are optimal for your application. Your choice of original or replacement styli and configuration will have a significant effect on the measurement accuracy.
Original, Replacement Styli
A Renishaw stylus is that part of the measuring system which makes contact with the component, enabling the cmm styli probe’s mechanism to take a measurement. The feature to be inspected dictates the type and size of stylus used. In all cases, however, max rigidity of the stylus and perfect sphericity of the tip are vital. To achieve this, Renishaw stylus stems are produced on CNC machine tools to exacting standards. Genuine Renishaw stylus balls are produced to the highest standards and are bonded to the stems in such a way as to ensure max joint integrity for original cmm styli and replacement styli.
A few suggestions:
Keep the cmm stylus ball as large as possible to maximize your ball/stem clearance, and reduce the chance of false triggers caused by shanking out on the Renishaw stylus stem, and increasing the EWL. A larger ball allows a larger step diameter, and increases the stiffness of the original or replacement styli.
The Effective Working Level, or EWL, is measured from the center of the cmm stylus ball to the point at which the cmm styli stem will foul against the feature when measuring normal to the part.
Minimize Joints. Every time you join replacement styli, cmm styli or add Renishaw stylus extensions, you introduce potential bending and deflection points. Wherever possible, try to keep the minimum number of pieces possible for your application.
